Following their protest action on Wednesday, environmentalist group Just Stop Oil has seen an outpouring of support from pro-lichen activists and experts. “I have never seen anything like it” one expert, who asked to remain anonymous stated. “Those protestors are heroes for bringing attention to the issue of lichen preservation” another expert told us.
“I never really knew what lichen was until yesterday, but now protecting it is the most important goal for my family” a member of the public said. Another told us: “I’m not really sure what Lichen is, but I know it’s important”.
According to Wikipedia: “A lichen is a symbiosis of algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species, along with a yeast embedded in the cortex or “skin”, in a mutualistic relationship”.
The protest group has been controversial in the past, taking action some view as extreme to protest against climate change. One of the lichen experts we interviewed told us: “You know, I had some issues with the actions this group took in the past” noting that “people already know about Van Gogh, but no one knew about the lichen”.
An art expert disagreed with the claim, noting that “No one really thought of the frames of these artworks as important before, but now they are more valuable than the artwork itself”.
